Minimizing risk is often a goal of aging programs and services. Although risk typically carries negative connotations linked to personal harm or adverse outcomes, the value of everyday risks is typically overlooked. The term itself evolved from the Italian word risicare meaning to dare or to venture. Daring to embark on a new friendship, venturing into the creative arts are all examples of risks that can bring meaningful rewards, not because of their guaranteed success but because of the potential for failure. De Medeiros argues that meaningful activity involves a degree of risk that should be encouraged rather than eliminated and suggest ways for rethinking in later life.
Kate de Medeiros is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Concordia University. As a social gerontologist, her work has explored various topics related to the experience of growing old to include friendships in later life, the meaning of suffering, and home, place and identity.
This is a hybrid event. Registration is mandatory for both virtual and in person participation. The venue is wheelchair accessible and voice amplification will be used by the speaker.
